Off-Road Driving Guide

Owning a 4wd gives you the freedom to get away from the daily grind and explore some of the great countryside that Australia has to offer. The freedom a 4wd vehicle brings you also comes wih it's own set of unique risks. This is why it's so important that you're properly prepared before you head out on your next big adventure. This off-road driving guide will help you plan your trip and give you every chance of getting home safely.

Before you head out
Your vehcile should be thoroughly inspected before you head off-road. Be it for a weekend or a month long getaway.
Ensure that you:
Have enough water to last twice the planned duration of the tip for all passengers  in case of emergency
Check the condition of your vehicles' hoses, battery, tyres and fluids (levels and quality)
Have sufficient off road equipment for your planned journey. This may include emergency tyre repair kits, tow ropes, winches, jacks, lighting, vehicle spares, GPS or area maps, air pump, solar phone charger and hand tools.
Tell someone where you are going and when you are due back. Be sure to let them know if you're not going to be back when originally planned.

Observe your surroundings
Once off-road put your vehicle in 4wd mode prior to any situation where you think the vehicle will require extra traction. If in doubt, you are always better to opt for the incread grip of the 4wd system than run the risk of getting stuck. Get into the habit of scanning to the left and right of your vehicle as well as anticipating the conditions ahead. If you're only paying attention to one side of the vehicle, there is a chance that the other side will get you into trouble.

Keep your thumbs away from the inside of the steering wheel. If your vehicle suddendly drops or gets stuck on the terrain the steering wheel can spin violently, with sometimes devastating results. This risk is reduced for vehciles fitted with power steering, but keeping the thumbs clear is good driving practice regardless of the vehicle.

Go easy
Power, speed and sharp cornering is not required in rough off road driving. In vehicle fitted with low range gears, near idle speeds will be able to pull you along some of the toughest terrain. Be mindful of the lowest points of your vehicle (differentials and exhaust) and avoid catching them on uneven surfaces. You're better off getting to your destination a little late, then not getting there at all.

Driving on sand
When driving on sand it is recommended to reduce the pressure in your tyres by 10-12psi below their normal operating pressure. Try using high-range 4wd to maintain forward momentum; however depending on the conditions it may be appropriate to use low range gears. Try to take your turns as wide as possible, tight turns  slow your vehicle quickly and can cause you to get stuck. Forward momentum is the key.

Hills
It's important when driving on hills that you go straight up, or straight down. Depending on the grade of the hill there is a chance the vehicle could roll if not driven straight. If possible walk to the top of hills to see what's on the other side prior to taking to the 4wd. Better safe than sorry. If the hill is very steep and you're unsure whether your car can make it, or you're just not feeling confident,  don't attempt the climb. Try to find another way around.

When at the base of the hill you can apply your power, ease up when you approach the top and begin to head over the crest. If you happen to stall the vehicle whilst climbing the hill, don't panic, simply back straight down the hill in reverse. When decending use the lowest gear available. Do not engage the clutch to coast down the hill face. Not only is this unsafe, it could also cause damage to the vehicles clutch system.

Environment
The great outdoors should be able to be enjoyed by everyone for many generations to come. When adventuring off-road leave your surroundings better than you found them. Observe posted signes and stick to recreational areas which have been approved for 4wd access. Finally, when you're ready to return home, don't leave anything behind.
